Kamala Harris was born to immigrant parents - her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a cancer researcher from India, and her father, Donald Harris, was an economist from Jamaica. She spent her early years in Berkeley, California, before moving to Montreal, Canada, during her high school years. Harris attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she majored in political science and economics. She then went on to earn her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After law school, Harris worked as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California, before becoming the District Attorney of San Francisco in 2003. In 2010, Kamala Harris was elected as the Attorney General of California, becoming the first woman, the first African American, and the first Indian American to hold the office in the state's history.
